‘It’s important we don’t take our foot off the gas’ – Spurs boss Skinner previews Brighton test

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Rehanne Skinner is calling on her side not to get complacent when they travel to Brighton & Hove Albion this afternoon.

The two sides have taken massive strides forward in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in recent times and this afternoon’s game promises to be a fascinating encounter.

When speaking in her pre-match press conference, Spurs head coach Skinner said that her side should take nothing for granted and they should be very aware of the threat of an evolving Brighton & Hove Albion side.

“Brighton are always consistent performers,” Skinner said. “Hope’s (Powell) strengthening her squad the same as what we have done here, obviously we’ve had a few more changes to the squad overall.

“You always go to Brighton knowing that they are capable of taking points off you and credit where credit’s due, they are consistently in and around it.

“I think it’s important that we don’t take our foot off the gas. I am a big believer that we’ve got to do what we do well and that will help us to move forward in the direction that we want.

“It’ll be a tough test but we are ready for it. We’ve had four tough tests already and we’ve done okay so far so we’ve just got to keep that going.”

Spurs go into the match with four wins out of four in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League. Nobody expected The Lilywhites to have 12 points on the board, especially after the club made so many player changes in the summer but Skinner said that she is not surprised by Spurs’ flying start.

When asked about whether she was shocked by the great start, Skinner said “No, I think ultimately, we’ve put the preparation in, developed and strengthened the squad and the way that the players are going about this season, I think we are in a very good position with players who are experienced and competitive.

“Ultimately, right now, we have worked incredibly hard to ensure that the team sticks together and everyone knows what the direction is for the club and what our vision is. At the moment, we are all believing in what we are trying to do and everybody is on the same page.

“It’s not just about the results. When you look the content of the majority of the games, we’ve dominated possession, we’ve got the second-best entries into the final third that create clear-cut goalscoring chances. When you look at the actual data, it is no shock that we are where we are and for us, it is just important that we sustain that.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at The People’s Pension Stadium kicks-off at 2pm.
