‘This is super important’ – Conti Cup progression important for Manchester United says Skinner

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that it is really important for his side to take another step towards winning a trophy by qualifying for the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.

The Red Devils face Everton at Walton Hall Park on Wednesday evening in their final group game. Skinner’s side need to better Manchester City’s result against Leicester City while goal difference could also be a factor in determining the group winner.

When speaking in his pre-match press conference, Skinner said that qualifying for the last eight is important.

“It is so important,” Skinner said. “We were really disappointed that we didn’t take the result against Leicester because we dominated the game and gave some sloppy goals away.

“This is super important, we’ve put ourselves in a position now that should Manchester City lose or draw and we win, we put ourselves in the position to win the group.”

Skinner has used the FA Women’s Continental League Cup to rotate his squad and offer minutes to players who are short of game time. The Manchester United boss was keen to emphasise the positives of that move.

He said “When we have rotated players, we have given them the chance to show their qualities rather than rotate for the sake of it. That has been a real help to us because in season it is hard to get game time. We’ve used this and the players have used this as a platform to show their qualities.

“We are going to continue to use this to push hard, we are going to try and beat Everton. We know that is a difficult task but that is what we want to do. We have got to take three points and build on the performance against Brighton.

“I want consistency, I’d like to see consistency in high performance tomorrow to show that we are building and continuing to progress.”
