Harrison double helps Bristol City to comfortable victory at Durham

Abi Harrison’s first half brace helped Bristol City to a 3-0 FA Women’s Championship victory at Durham this afternoon.

The Scotland international netted at the start of the first half and at the end of it while substitute Aggie Beever-Jones was also on target as Bristol City’s excellent run continued in soggy conditions in the North East.

Bristol City opened the scoring in the 11th minute against the run of play when Harrison looped the ball over home keeper Naoisha McAloon and into the back of the net.

The leg of Sarah Wilson then denied The Robins a second goal following a deadly Harrison cross in from the right before Fran Bentley blocked an Emily Roberts effort with an outstretched leg at the other end.

The visitors would go into the break two goals to the good when Mel Johnson crossed for Harrison to steer the ball home.

McAloon denied Johnson from close range early in the second half before Dee Bradley, Wilson and Mollie Lambert tested Bentley in quick succession at the other end.

Durham pushed hard to get back into the game and thought they had done just that but the referee blew up for a foul after Rio Hardy had fired the ball home. The Wildcats then came up against an inspired goalkeeper in Bentley. The Manchester United loanee made two exceptional saves as Bristol City kept their two-goal advantage intact.

The Robins ended the game 3-0 winners as substitute Beever-Jones slotted home when left one-on-one with McAloon in second half injury time.

Bristol City move to within nine points of league leaders Liverpool ahead of their fixture against Sunderland later this afternoon. The Robins also have a game in hand over the Merseyside club.
