‘Promotion is 100% the aim’ – Durham captain Wilson issues defiant message following defeat

Durham captain Sarah Wilson reiterated the club’s desire to win promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League following their 3-0 defeat to Bristol City at Maiden Castle this afternoon.

The Wildcats were far from at their best against Lauren Smith’s ever-improving Bristol City side. Victory for the visitors kept their slim promotion hopes alive, however, the defeat for Durham now means that The Wildcats are likely to be playing second tier football again next season.

Speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the defeat at Maiden Castle, Wilson reiterated Durham’s desire to win promotion whether that be this season or in the future.

“We’ve got a plan, we’ve got everything set out for what we want to achieve,” Wilson said. “We’ve had some challenges off the pitch and we are just putting this season down to a learning curve.

“We’ve always been up there, it is always something that we want to be and promotion is 100% the aim. We’ve obviously made it really tough for ourselves so far this year but we still have to keep believing, if it’s not this year we are going to push on and it’s going to be next year.”

Against an opponent who brought plenty of physicality with them to the North East, as well as effective attacking football, Durham struggled to get themselves into the contest. It was an uncharacteristic off-colour performance from Lee Sanders’ side, something which Wilson agreed with.

She said “It was a very frustrating day, it wasn’t an ‘us’ performance. I think we started well and the first 10 minutes were good but we kind of let our heads go down after we conceded. It was just very frustrating.

“We showed a little bit more fight (in the second half) but we have to do that from the beginning. When you play against teams like this who have so much quality in the side, you are always going to struggle.”

Durham return to action after the international break with a home tie against Birmingham City in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round on Sunday 27 February.
