Birmingham City’s slim survival hopes dealt another blow in goalless draw with Everton

Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League survival hopes have suffered a further blow after the Blues could only play out a goalless draw with Everton at St Andrew’s this evening.

With Birmingham City being eight points from safety with just five games to play, Darren Carter’s side had to beat Everton this evening to give their survival chances a boost but they were only able to play out a frustrating goalless draw which will not live long in the memory.

There were just three shots on target in the entire game, a story which arguably summed up the frustrating campaigns of both sides.

Everton were the stronger of the two sides in the first half. Kenza Dali looked lively early on and was able to trouble Emily Ramsey in the home goal with an effort while Izzy Christiansen was denied by a superb save by the Birmingham City keeper just before the break. The Blue Girls created some other chances in the opening 45 minutes but they were so often guilty of some poor finishing.

Birmingham City were brighter in the second half but for all of their positive attacking movement, they really struggled to carve out quality goalscoring opportunities. It wasn’t until second half injury time that they troubled Sandy MacIver, Lucy Quinn desperately tried to loop the ball into the net but the Everton keeper claimed it.

The result leaves Birmingham City seven points from safety with four games to play. Given the fact that two of their remaining games are against Manchester City and Chelsea, even the most optimistic Blues fan will believe that survival now looks to be beyond them.
