Arsenal will be keen to bounce back from their UEFA Women’s Champions League exit when they travel to The King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City on Sunday.
A 3-1 aggregate defeat to German club VfL Wolfsburg saw The Gunners dumped out of Europe at the quarter-final stage and all eyes now turn back to domestic action.
Ahead of this weekend’s fixture, FAWSL Full-Time have reviewed the match statistics by Opta. Here are four facts which relate to Leicester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting with Arsenal.
Arsenal are tough opponents for newly-promoted teams
Arsenal are currently unbeaten in 20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches against newly-promoted opponents (W18 D2) since losing their first such match against Manchester City in May 2014. They have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six league games against these sides.
Previous meetings have produced goals
Leicester City and Arsenal’s last two meetings in all competitions have seen a total of 11 goals scored, with all 11 being netted by The Gunners. Arsenal defeated Leicester City 4-0 in the reverse fixture in December while they won 7-0 in the East Midlands in the League Cup in November 2008.
Two sides with different build-up styles
Leicester City have progressed 1.69 metres per second upfield with their open play sequences in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League, the quickest of any side. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s open play sequences have seen them progress 1.1 metres upfield on average – only Manchester City have a lower figure (0.92).
Mead bidding for assists milestone
Arsenal forward Beth Mead’s next Barclays FA Women’s Super League assist will be her 36th in the competition, which would take her past Karen Carney to become the player with the most assists in the competition’s history. Mead has also scored in consecutive league matches and could score in three consecutive Barclays FA Women’s Super League games for the first time since May 2018.
The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Leicester City and Arsenal kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
