England boss Wiegman tests positive for COVID-19

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss this evening’s final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group match against Northern Ireland in Southampton.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a squad update from The Football Association just a short time ago.

Wiegman is believed to be in good spirits and she is now self-isolating from the squad. Assistant head coach Arjan Veurink will oversee team matters at St Mary’s this evening in Wiegman’s absence. Wiegman remains in contact with the squad virtually and it is possible that she could return to the dugout for England’s quarter-final should she post a negative test.

There is nothing riding on tonight’s match, England are already through as group winners after victories over Austria and Norway while latest opponents Northern Ireland are out after back-to-back losses. Despite having secured their place in the quarter-finals, England head coach Wiegman is taking her side’s final game seriously and she has hinted on playing a strong squad with very few changes.

England’s final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group match against Northern Ireland at St Mary’s kicks-off at 8pm this evening. All tickets for the game have sold out, however, the match is being broadcast live on BBC One.
