French international defender Tounkara joins Manchester United

Manchester United have completed the signing of French international defender Aïssatou Tounkara on a two-year deal.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Red Devils this afternoon.

Tounkara joins Manchester United off the back of four seasons playing in the Spanish Primera Iberdrola with Atlético Madrid. The defender made 83 appearances at the top level of the Spanish game in which she scored six goals. Tounkara was a Primera Iberdrola title winner with Atlético in 2018/2019 while she later won the Supercopa Femenina with The Red and Whites. The defender also has plenty of experience of playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League under her belt.

Tounkara arrives at Manchester United on the back of representing the French national team at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. She helped Les Bleues to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the very first time.

After completing her move to the Leigh Sports Village, Tounkara said “I am very happy and honoured to join such a prestigious team as Manchester United. I can’t wait to start this new challenge and join my teammates.”

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner has now made seven new signings in the summer transfer window.
