Standards of Manchester United captain Zelem continually pushed says head coach Skinner

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that he continually challenges captain Katie Zelem to push herself as she looks to force her way into England boss Sarina Wiegman’s plans for next summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Zelem was a member of Wiegman’s England squad for the October international window but she was again forced to watch on from the bench as the Lionesses defeated the United States at Wembley and were held by the Czech Republic in Brighton. The midfielder’s qualities have been recognised by Wiegman, however, the England boss currently prefers other options in that area of the pitch.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time, Manchester United boss Skinner said that there has been positive dialogue between himself and England boss Wiegman whilst adding that he pushes captain Zelem to raise her standards every single day.

“Whenever I speak with Sarina, there is an absolute respect for the qualities that Katie brings,” Skinner said. “I think she understands just how she gels people together.

“Playing in midfield is all about balance, it is all about playing the right players in the right combinations.

“I think that Katie can only keep doing what Katie is doing but because she is my captain, I’m actually probably overly harsh on her. I’m trying to get her to push her own standards, push her qualities and I think you have seen that this season to be honest.”

Skinner went on to praise Zelem’s attitude, commenting that the player is excellent at taking on instructions and that she shows immense passion for the game.

“She takes everything onboard so brilliantly, she links people and connects people so well, she’s a set-piece specialist and so her qualities and how she sees the game are amazing.

“When you speak to her about games, she is really integrated and passionate about it. I just want her to keep being her and I will keep pushing her in training. She is a great professional.”

Zelem will next lead the Manchester United team out when they face Brighton & Hove Albion at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.
