Brighton focused on their application against Manchester City says Merricks

Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim manager Amy Merricks believes that application is key to her side getting anything from their fixture against Manchester City at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

The Seagulls have improved during Merricks’ month-long tenure in interim charge but the Sussex club’s progress will be severely tested by high-flying Manchester City this afternoon.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim boss Merricks highlighted the fact that her side must apply their game plan well to have any chance of being successful.

“It’ll be a challenge like every game is, they’re a good side who move the ball very well,” Merricks said. “First and foremost for us, we need to be hard to beat and if we really apply ourselves, we will give ourselves the best chance within the game.

“It is about us applying ourselves, remembering that we have a threat to pose as well, impose ourselves on the game where we can and go from there. It is all about the performance – if we apply ourselves and if we can stay in it, we will make it difficult for them.”

Reflecting on her side’s recent performances, Merricks said that the players have shown belief in the process, striking a good balance of defensive and attacking qualities.

She said “The players have shown some belief. When you start scoring, it is easier to continue that momentum so we are just building on those foundations, our strengths and what works for us in those moments, making sure that we try to play with some intent. We have some very talented players in our front-line and we are utilising that where we can, making sure that we have a threat in games.

“I truly believe that the players have tried to apply themselves in relation to that for sure.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester City kicks-off at 2pm.
