Newcastle United sign former Sunderland midfielder Kelly

Newcastle United have completed the signing of former Sunderland midfielder Emma Kelly on a free transfer.

The Magpies announced the signing via a post on their official club website this morning.

Kelly joins Newcastle United after leaving her former club last month upon the expiry of her contract. The midfielder has enjoyed two spells with Sunderland. Her latest spell lasted two seasons with the player making 41 appearances for the club in the Barclays Women’s Championship in which she scored two goals.

After securing Kelly’s services, Newcastle United manager Becky Langley said “I am very excited to work with Emma this season.

“I’ve known Emma for a lot of years and she’s a talented player. She will bring great leadership qualities from her experience in the WSL and Championship.

“Emma also played full-time in Iceland which brings great experience.”

Kelly joins a Newcastle United side that won the FA Women’s National League Division One North title last season. The Magpies will play in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division this season, the third tier of the women’s game. The club have ambitious plans to push for promotion to the elite game in the coming years and signing experienced players like Kelly will only boost their hopes.
