Charlton Athletic are one of the clubs who could force their way into the Barclays Women’s Championship’s promotion mix this season but Angela Addison says that continuous improvement is the initial aim.
The Addicks are set to begin their third season as a full-time professional club. Last season saw the South East Londoners finish the campaign one place and four points better off than in the previous season.
When speaking exclusively to FAWSL Full-Time, Charlton Athletic forward Addison said that improving on the previous season’s performance is again the club’s initial aim.
“You look at the clubs in the league last year and compare it to this year, it’s even more competitive this season,” Addison said. “That’s brilliant for the league and for the fans.
“For us, we are just looking to improve each season, not get carried away but also, we just want to win games.”
Charlton Athletic head coach Karen Hills has been busy in the summer transfer window, adding lots of experience to her squad. Two of the most experienced arrivals are former West Ham United captain Kate Longhurst and Welsh forward Kayleigh Green. Addison said that both Longhurst and Green will bring so much to the squad while the other new signings will bring their own individual qualities too.
She said “It’s brilliant. The experience that they have had in the WSL and the standards that they drive, they are brilliant to have in the squad. The other new signings are extremely good as well and they all have experience.
“Everyone can pose different questions. Whether they have been playing in the WSL or elsewhere, they have experience and knowledge to pass on to other players.
“I’d say it has been a good transfer window for Charlton.”
Charlton Athletic kick-off the new season with a fixture against Sheffield United at The Valley. Addison hopes that the game will attract a bumper opening day crowd.
“The Valley is such an amazing ground,” Addison said. “We were lucky to have played there last season quite a few times and we arguably deserved that opportunity. We were unbeaten there which is a credit to us.
“It is a good ground to play in and hopefully, we can draw in an even bigger crowd this time given what the Lionesses have achieved this summer and also based on what we achieved last season.”
