Everton claim first points of the season in Merseyside derby victory at Anfield

Everton are up and running in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League after recording a 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.

Captain Megan Finnigan netted the only goal of the game in the first half as Brian Sørensen’s side got off the mark at the third time of asking.

It was Liverpool who thought that they had opened the scoring early in the game when Missy Bo Kearns slotted the ball into the back of the net, however, the flag went up and the goal was ruled out for offside.

Just a few minutes later, Ceri Holland won the ball and fired a dangerous shot on goal, however, her effort bounced off the crossbar, narrowly avoiding the goal-line.

Everton responded and Nicoline Sørensen played the ball to Emma Bissell in the box but she couldn’t quite get the necessary contact.

The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark. Everton captain Finnigan headed home from a Katrine Veje corner. That goal was the first that Liverpool have conceded in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season.

Marie Höbinger attempted to level things up for Liverpool just before half-time but her shot was well-caught by Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan.

Liverpool made a strong start to the second half. Kearns received the ball and tried her luck at goal, however, her effort went wide of the target. Mia Enderby then moved wonderfully through the Everton defence but her shot was gathered by Brosnan.

At the other end, Justine Vanhaevermaet curled a free-kick wide of the Liverpool goal before Katja Snoeijs almost made it two for The Blue Girls but her attempt hit the crossbar.

The hosts pushed for a way back into the game but Everton claimed three points at Anfield, just as they did in the same fixture last season.

The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table while Everton move up to eighth.
