Birmingham City continue improved form with victory at Sheffield United

Birmingham City have continued their recent upturn in form with a 4-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this afternoon.

Two goals in each half, spread across four different goalscorers, saw the Blues emerge as deserved winners.

It was the perfect start for the visitors who found themselves 1-0 up inside two minutes. Birmingham City were awarded a corner kick and Gemma Lawley headed in Lucy Quinn’s delivery to give Darren Carter’s side a very early advantage.

The Blues came close to doubling their lead from a similar situation. This time, it was Ellie Mason who almost headed home from a Lucy Quinn corner.

Sheffield United struggled to string a threatening sequence of passes together and anything that reached the final third was easily dealt with by the Blues defence. The Blades had their first real chance midway through the opening period. Isobel Goodwin received the ball out wide on the left and she drove forward, beating a defender before her angled shot was comfortably saved by visiting keeper Lucy Thomas.

Birmingham City doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark through Martha Harris. The ball fell to the full-back’s feet around 25 yards out and with no hesitation, she struck a beautiful effort which soared into the top left corner.

The visitors continued to push forward in the early stages of the second half and it wasn’t long until they found their third goal. Lucy Quinn, who provided the assist for Lawley’s goal, found herself isolated in the middle of the box. The ball fell to her feet and all she had to do was slot it past Fran Stenson.

Stenson denied Ivana Fuso from scoring her side’s fourth goal by producing a superb save but the Blues did find the back of the net again through Remi Allen. Despite appeals for a hand ball in the build-up, the midfielder charged through The Blades’ defence and calmly slotted her effort home.

The victory moves Birmingham City up to seventh position in the Barclays Women’s Championship table while Sheffield United are ninth.
