Brighton keen to better Manchester City performance against Arsenal says Phillips

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Melissa Phillips says that her side want to be even better against Arsenal this weekend than they were against Manchester City in their last match.

The Seagulls caused one of the shocks of the season so far as they won 1-0 against Manchester City at The Academy Stadium on Sunday.

Brighton & Hove Albion must now try to replicate that performance against Arsenal back home at Broadfield Stadium. When speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Phillips said that her side want to be even better against The Gunners.

“The impressive thing about this group is that despite coming home with three points (from Manchester City), we were critical of our performance in a positive way,” Phillips said. “We want to be better on both sides of the ball and that’s how we’ve been from game one.

“We took a lot from the first four or five games and learned a lot about ourselves. We have been able to implement changes in a really positive way but we know our next performance has to be just as focused, just as intense and even better on the ball.”

Phillips went on to say that her players have worked hard in training this week but they must carry that on into the weekend as they come up against an Arsenal side that scored six last time out.

She said “We have to focus on the things that made us successful in those performances (against the Manchester clubs). We create those and take them to the next level.

“We have very clear growth areas after each game that we look to get after in training sessions. It has been a really competitive, intense and focused week and we know that the performance at the weekend will have to be the same.

“Arsenal have a Champions League-built squad and they have a lot of depth coming off the bench at late moments. We know that we will have to manage those threats, be really switched on, take our chances and be even better with the ball.”
