Former top scorer ends two-year stay with Liverpool

Liverpool have confirmed that striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk has left the club following the expiry of her contract with her departure being announced on the club’s official website this afternoon.

The 29-year-old Leicester-born forward was The Reds’ top scorer in the FA Women’s Super League in 2018/2019 with 10 goals but she has failed to find the back of the net in the league during the current campaign.

Sweetman-Kirk was only under contract until the end of the season and it has now been revealed that the player has moved on, ending her two-year stay with Liverpool.

The striker joined Liverpool in 2018 after netting nine goals in all competitions for city rivals Everton during the 2017/2018 campaign. Sweetman-Kirk can also count Leicester City, Coventry City, Notts County and Doncaster Rovers Belles as her former clubs.

A big season was expected from the player this season but she has managed just 600 minutes of football in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League as Liverpool have sunk to the bottom of the table.

The player had enjoyed a successful pre-season which saw her score five goals during her side’s pre-season tour of the United States. Sweetman-Kirk’s 2019/2020 campaign has been really frustrating for her with the forward’s only goal coming in a 6-0 FA Women’s Continental League Cup victory over second tier club Blackburn Rovers in November.
