Chelsea midfielder on target in Germany’s victory over Montenegro

Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz was on target for Germany as they defeated Montenegro 3-0 in Podgorica this afternoon in their latest UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match.

The 26-year-old netted the Germans’ second goal as they collected their sixth consecutive victory in qualifying, leaving the nation on the verge of securing their place in the tournament finals.

Laura Freigang’s third-minute strike opened the scoring for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side while Leupolz added her name to the scoresheet in the second minute of first half stoppage time after being played in by Paulina Krumbiegel. The Chelsea midfielder featured for nine minutes of the second half before being replaced by Dzsenifer Marozsan.

Sydney Lohmann’s 59th-minute goal completed the victory for Germany, leaving them five points clear at the top of their qualification group. Voss-Tecklenburg’s side have netted 37 goals in qualifying while they are yet to concede.

Chelsea midfielder Leupolz was joined in the German line-up by another Barclays FA Women’s Super League player in the form of Arsenal defender Leonie Maier. The full-back played the first 47 minutes against Montenegro, playing her part in preventing the opposition from calling German keeper Laura Benkarth into action at any point.

Both Leupolz and Maier will now be hoping to feature for their clubs in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend.
