Chelsea defender Jonna Andersson has collected her 50th senior international cap for Sweden in the nation’s 1-1 draw against Iceland in Reykjavik this evening.
The 27-year-old has played the full 90 minutes of both of Sweden’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifiers against Hungary and Iceland during the past week as her nation have gone on to collect four points.
Sweden needed at least a draw from their meeting with Iceland at Laugardalsvöllur this evening to retain their position at the top of their qualifying group and they managed to do just that.
Anna Anvegard fired the Swedes ahead in the 34th minute after they had created more of the attacking opportunities. A big second half performance was required by Iceland as they needed a draw themselves to end the night level on points with their opponents. Elin Metta Jensen got the home side back into the contest just after the hour.
Both sides had chances to win it but they were made to settle for a share of the spoils in Reykjavik.
It was not quite the way in which Chelsea defender Andersson will have wanted to celebrate her 50th senior cap for her country, however, she has a real chance of being at the UEFA Women’s EURO finals with Sweden in 2022. The Swedes play their next two qualifying matches on home soil while their final away fixture sees them take on a Slovakian side who have won just one match so far.
