Liverpool exit Conti Cup as Everton secure derby day victory

Liverpool are out of this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup after being defeated 1-0 by Everton at Walton Hall Park this evening.

Izzy Christiansen’s early goal proved to be enough for Everton who keep their qualification hopes alive with one group game remaining.

Both teams began the game as if there was more than just three points on the line with plenty of frenetic and intense play, but it was Everton who snatched an early lead.

A long ball over the top from Danielle Turner found Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah who caused all sorts of chaos in the Liverpool area. After a couple of ricochets, the ball fell kindly to Christiansen who calmly slotted the ball into an unguarded net.

The game carried on very evenly after that with both sides having chances. Whilst the majority fell the way of Liverpool, the best probably went the way of Everton academy product, Grace Clinton. The youngster was played through into the area and she fired across goal from a narrow angle, sending her effort wide of the far post.

Liverpool started the second period strongly with some dangerous looking counter attacks, however, Everton were able to get a strangle hold on the game and they came close, forcing a number of goal-line clearances. The first came courtesy of some sloppy Liverpool play at the back which left the goal exposed. Substitute Hayley Raso received the ball and fired a shot goalwards only to be denied by Taylor Hinds. Then just moments later, Damaris Egurrola got on the end of a cross and her effort glanced off the post but Hinds was there again to prevent the ball from going over the line.

Raso then had another great opportunity from the edge of the area but visiting keeper Rylee Foster produced a fine save to deny the Australian international. The loose ball nearly drifted into the goal, although this time Becky Jane was there to keep Vicky Jepson’s side in the game.

The match was to end 1-0 which now means that Liverpool exit the competition while Everton must defeat Manchester United in their final game to have any hope of qualification.
