Hope Powell concedes that Manchester City were ‘far better’ than Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion continue to struggle at home, having failed to record a win in their last five Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures on their own turf.

The Seagulls continue to struggle with absentees due to injury and COVID-19 self-isolation and that didn’t help their cause yesterday as they fell to a 7-1 defeat to Barclays FA Women’s Super League title chasers Manchester City.

Brighton & Hove Albion were able to limit the visitors’ chances in the first half but City took those which did come their way with the brilliance of Caroline Weir and Chloe Kelly shining through as they found themselves 3-0 up at half-time. After the match, Albion boss Hope Powell was happy to acknowledge the superiority of Gareth Taylor’s side.

“I have to concede they were far better than us today, they were very clinical and moved the ball very well” Powell told Albion’s official media channels in an interview which was later shared with FAWSL Full-Time. “We couldn’t match it.”

The former England manager was able to find positives in her side’s performance. She said “I was pleased that we gave it a go but it just wasn’t good enough.

“It was a bit of a makeshift team, Kayleigh (Green) at right-back, Megan Connolly at left-back.

“I thought that they were excellent today but it leaves you light in other areas.

“COVID has caused a bit of an issue for us this week and last week.”

Looking ahead to Albion’s next fixture on Saturday against Bristol City, Powell was keen to point out the significance of the game to their league ambitions.

“They recognise it wasn’t good enough (today)” she said. “Next week is a very big game for us and to win it, we are going to have to perform better than we did today.”

Brighton & Hove Albion will take on a winless Bristol City side at Twerton Park with the club looking to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.
