Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor praises ‘hungry’ Chloe Kelly for her Brighton performance

Gareth Taylor led Manchester City to their second seven-goal win within a week yesterday as they won 7-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Manchester City eased to victory over a makeshift Brighton & Hove Albion side. Despite playing 120 minutes against Chelsea in their 4-2 loss in the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, City showed no signs of fatigue as they eased to a 3-0 first half lead against Albion in Sussex. Going into the second half they didn’t relent, increasing their lead to 7-1, leaving head coach Taylor upbeat in his post-match press conference where FAWSL Full-Time were present.

“Some of our goals were excellent from back to front” said Taylor.

“It’s taken us a little bit of time to get our build up play right, like against Brighton earlier in the season our decision making was slightly off or players weren’t in the right position.

“It takes some time with a new coach and new ideas, now we’re are finishing those chances.”

There were particularly strong performances from Caroline Weir, Chloe Kelly and Steph Houghton against Brighton & Hove Albion. Speaking about Weir, Taylor said “Caroline Weir for 45 minutes showed her class when it mattered and contributed well.”

The City head coach then commented on Kelly’s performance by saying “Chloe was great, we’ve been challenging her to make better decisions in the final third.

“Her decision making today was really good and to create three goals is no mean feat

“This girl has the potential to do really well. She’s really good to work with, really hungry to improve and that’s all you can ask for.”

Taylor then went on to praise ‘ambassador’ Houghton for reaching the unrivalled feat of 150 Barclays FA Women’s Super League appearances. He said “I thought she capped off that landmark with not only the first goal but the second goal was a brilliant effort and you don’t get many better free-kicks than that.

“She’s right in there (with the greats) for what she’s brought to the game and the team in difficult moments, it’s one (feat) that she fully deserves.”

Manchester City return to The Academy Stadium next Sunday when they face West Ham United with Taylor looking for his side to ‘stay in the mix’ during the final few months of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season.
