London City Lionesses defeat Charlton Athletic to record first away win of the season

London City Lionesses have recorded their first away win of the season in the FA Women’s Championship, beating bottom club Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Oakwood this evening.

The Pride had drawn three and lost two of their five away fixtures this season prior to this evening’s short trip to Crayford but Melissa Phillips’ side have now ended their winless run on their travels with a narrow victory over The Addicks.

Freda Ayisi went close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors just before the half-hour but she was denied by Rachel Newborough who performed an important block. The Pride netted the game’s only goal five minutes before the break when Kallie Balfour curled an impressive strike into the net.

Charlton Athletic started the second half strongly and went close to levelling matters on a couple of occasions. The Addicks boss Riteesh Mishra brought attackers Emma Plewa and Katie Godden on for their debuts later in the half as his side continued to search for a goal but London City Lionesses held firm as they claimed a first away league victory since December 2019 when The Pride won 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers.

Phillips’ side remain in fifth position in the FA Women’s Championship table, although they have closed the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Liverpool to two points.
