Australian international Caitlin Foord has officially signed for reigning FA Women’s Super League champions Arsenal as announced by The Gunners earlier today, ending weeks of speculation over the possible transfer.
In doing so, the New South Wales native joins three of her Matilda’s teammates in moving to the FA Women’ Super League this transfer window, after Sam Kerr, Hayley Raso and Chloe Logarzo recently signed for Chelsea, Everton and Bristol City respectively.
The versatile forward, The Gunners’ only signing of the transfer window, has the ability to play anywhere across the forward line as well as in defence as a full-back or wing-back, so she will provide another option for an Arsenal side that have lacked in depth this season.
Foord joins the Gunners mid-season from Sydney FC of the W-League, where she has tallied 86 appearances across four separate stints with the club. She has also played in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), most recently for the Portland Thorns where she made 26 appearances and scored three goals across two seasons.
Orlando Pride currently hold Foord’s NWSL rights, after the recent trade between them and the Portland Thorns where, along with USA international Emily Sonnett, she was traded to The Pride in exchange for the number one selection in the 2020 NWSL College Draft.
Alongside her domestic achievements, the 25-year-old has been has been an important part of the Australian international set-up from a young age, making her senior debut in 2011 at just 16 years old. That same year, she was included in The Matilda’s squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, her first major international tournament. Her performances, primarily at right-back caught the attention of many and as a result, she was awarded the tournament’s Best Young Player award.
Since then, Foord has gone on to star for The Matilda’s regularly. She has played in two further FIFA Women’s World Cups, as well as the 2016 Olympic Games, having made a total of 77 senior appearances, scoring 17 goals in her international career so far.
Foord will link-up with her Arsenal teammates in mid-February due to her inclusion in The Matilda’s squad for the upcoming AFC Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Following the tournament’s conclusion she will be eligible to feature for The Gunners immediately.
The length of Foord’s contract at Meadow Park is currently unknown.
