Former Arsenal and Manchester City stars become W-League winners

Former Arsenal and Manchester City players Yukari Kinga and Claire Emslie have become W-League champions with Melbourne City after the Australian side won the Westfield W-League 2020 Grand Final at AAMI Park in Melbourne this morning.

Veteran defender Kinga played the first 67 minutes of the match in a more advanced midfield role while teammate Emslie featured for the full 90 minutes in attack as Melbourne City defeated Sydney 1-0.

Australian international Steph Catley netted the only goal of the game after 15 minutes with her effort deceiving Sydney goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe on it’s way to finding the back of the net.

Bledsoe made up for her error just after the half-hour mark when she produced a good save to deny Emslie as Melbourne City went into the break with just the one-goal advantage.

The second period saw Sydney become a greater threat and Melbourne City had goalkeeper Lydia Williams to thank as she prevented Veronica Latsko and Princess Ibini-Isei from levelling matters as City held on to claim another title.

Former Arsenal defender Kinga is now 35 years of age but put in a good shift in the middle of the park before coming off with 23 minutes to go. The player featured for The Gunners for a brief spell during the 2014 FA Women’s Super League 1 season in-between spells with Japanese club INAC Kobe Leonessa. Teammate Emslie left Manchester City last summer to join American club Orlando Pride and she has since been loaned to Melbourne City.
