Former Bristol City defender Julie Biesmans will compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in four seasons in 2020/2021 with current club PSV having qualified for the competition for the very first time in their history.
The 25-year-old Belgian international left The Robins at the end of last season and joined PSV, initially on a one-year deal which was later extended until next summer.
The Dutch Football Association, the KNVB, confirmed yesterday afternoon that the 2019/2020 Eredivisie Vrouwen would be ended early due to the Coronavirus pandemic. PSV hold a seven-point advantage over nearest title challengers Ajax after 12 games meaning that they qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in their history.
PSV’s European qualification means that former Bristol City defender Biesmans now has the opportunity to improve on her record in the UEFA Women’s Champions League create with her first club, Standard Liege. The defender appeared in the last-32 stage with the Belgian club on three occasions but has never gone any further in the competition in her career to date. With the player already confirmed as a member of the PSV squad next season, she now has the chance to reach new personal milestones in European football’s premier competition.
During her two-season spell in England with Bristol City, Biesmans was a player who The Robins certainly relied on. The defender started 16 of Bristol City’s 18 FA Women’s Super League fixtures in 2017/2018 while she was fielded from the off in all 20 games last term. She helped Tanya Oxtoby’s side to an impressive sixth-place finish last season before leaving for The Netherlands.
