Aston Villa have been promoted to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League as winners of the FA Women’s Championship on a points per game basis.
The Football Association confirmed the FA Women’s Championship’s final standings along with Villa’s promotion in an official press release at 11am this morning in which FA Women’s Super League Full-Time were included.
Gemma Davies’ side led the FA Women’s Championship by six points at the time in which the competition was suspended with just six games left to play. Villa held a points per game average which was 0.43 better than nearest title-challengers Sheffield United and have therefore been promoted to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League for the very first time on that basis.
An astonishing season saw Villa win 13 of their 14 league matches while they drew the other. That impressive record sees Davies’ side declared the deserving champions.
The bottom of the table saw five clubs battling relegation with Charlton Athletic being both winless and having the worst points per game average of just 0.58. The Addicks have survived the drop though with there being no relegation due to the third tier having previously been declared void.
Just one minor change has been made to the FA Women’s Championship table as a result of the points per game calculations. Lewes leapfrog Crystal Palace into eighth position courtesy of a record which is 0.04 better than The Eagles.
