Chelsea crowned champions as Liverpool’s relegation is confirmed

Chelsea have been crowned the 2019/2020 Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions with The Blues beating Manchester City to the league title on a points per game basis.

Emma Hayes’ side did trail City by a point before the competition was suspended in March, however, they held a game in hand and their overall points average was 0.10 per game better than the league leaders’ tally.

It has been confirmed that both Chelsea and Manchester City have qualified for the 2020/2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League.

At the bottom of the table, Liverpool’s disastrous campaign sees them finish in 12th position and they have therefore been relegated to the FA Women’s Championship while Bristol City and Birmingham City survive for another year.

Other than the winners and runners-up positions, points per game calculations have resulted in just one other adjustment being made. Seventh-placed side Everton leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur into sixth position with Willie Kirk’s side having a better points per game average of 0.03 than the North Londoners.

The 2020/2021 campaign is set to begin at the end of September and will again see 12 clubs compete in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. Liverpool’s place in the top flight will be taken by FA Women’s Championship winners Aston Villa.

The Football Association confirmed the final standings via an official press release at 11am this morning in which FA Women’s Super League Full-Time were included.
