Aston Villa’s 2019/2020 top scorer Melissa Johnson is one of eight players leaving the club this summer following their recent promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
Villa’s top flight status was finally confirmed by The Football Association last week but the club have today revealed via their official website that eight members of their promotion-winning squad will not be staying with them next season for their new adventure.
Second choice goalkeeper Daniela Kosinska is leaving Aston Villa whilst defenders Jade Richards, Alice Hassell, Charlotte Greengrass and Sophie Maierhofer are also moving on. Midfielder Phoebe Warner will also not be part of Villa’s squad next season, nor will troublesome forward Kerri Walsh.
Arguably, the biggest surprise on Villa’s exit list is top scorer Johnson. The forward joined the club on a one-year deal last summer following a spell with Villa’s Midlands rivals Leicester City and she has gone on to net a hugely impressive 12 goals in 14 league outings for Gemma Davies’ side. The part played by Johnson in Villa’s promotion push was certainly sizeable but she will now be playing her football elsewhere next term.
All eight players will officially become free agents once their current deals at Aston Villa come to an end on 30 June.
