Chelsea have today announced via their official website that they have completed the signing of highly-rated winger Niamh Charles.
The 21-year-old recently announced her departure from Chelsea’s former Barclays FA Women’s Super League rivals she Liverpool where she had graduated from the club’s Centre of Excellence to feature for the senior side.
The attacker went on to make 59 first team appearances during her time on Merseyside, scoring 11 goals. Two of those strikes came against her new side. Charles has also featured for England at various youth levels up to Under-20 level. She played at the UEFA Women’s EURO and FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup for The Young Lionesses in 2016 before helping her nation to bronze at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup two years later.
The youngster is highly-regarded as one of the country’s hottest prospects. Charles was awarded the ‘Rising Star’ award at the North West Football Awards two years ago, a mark of her superb qualities and ability and the player could thrive in the coming years at Chelsea playing alongside world-class stars.
Charles will wear the number 21 shirt for Chelsea and after signing her new deal, she told official club media channels “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Chelsea FC Women. This is a really proud day for not only myself, but also my family.
“Emma Hayes is one of the most highly-regarded managers in our game. She was a huge part of my decision to come to the club. I know she will help me fulfil my potential and I will be working hard to make sure I give myself every opportunity to learn, develop and improve as a player. I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m joining the current WSL champions and this club regularly competes for trophies domestically and in Europe – something I can’t wait to be a part of.”
Charles will link-up with her new teammates when they resume for pre-season training.
