Chelsea-bound German international midfielder Melanie Leupolz will end her six-year playing career with Bayern Munich on Sunday when the Bavarians travel to SGS Essen for their final FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga match of the season.
The 26-year-old has signed a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea and will initially spend the next three years at Kingsmeadow.
Leupolz could feature for Bayern Munich for one last time on Sunday as the club look to secure their place in next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. Jens Scheuer’s side might need to record a victory over SGS Essen at the Stadion Essen with nearest rivals TSG 1899 Hoffenheim boasting a better goal difference and being just two points behind going into the final day of action.
Midfielder Leupolz has made over a century of appearances for Bayern Munich in her six years with the club. She has twice lifted the FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga while she has also represented the club in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The German’s league goalscoring record of six goals in 19 games this season is her best as a Bayern Munich player.
Leupolz became Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Chelsea’s first summer signing when the club announced in March that the player will move to Kingsmeadow when her contract with Bayern Munich expires this summer. She will join what is already a multi-national squad which has carefully been assembled by Blues boss Emma Hayes.
