Coventry United’s Supporters’ Player of the Year, Shannon O’Brien, has agreed a new contract with the club ahead of the upcoming FA Women’s Championship campaign according to reports on their official website.
The 18-year-old had a record of 14 goal involvements from just 12 starts last season despite playing in a side that finished second from bottom in the FA Women’s Championship and being out through injury at the start of the campaign.
Tying their number nine down to a new deal could turn out to be a crucial move towards Coventry United’s potential survival next year. The club’s latest announcement comes on the heels of fellow forward Amber Hughes and midfielders Helen Dermody and Katy Morris also having signed new deals with the club.
It would be no surprise if O’Brien had built a long list of admirers given her form but she has pledged her services to Coventry United, ensuring that the club will not face any fight for her services this summer.
The challenge for manager Jay Bradford will be holding on to prodigies like O’Brien should the temptation of a big move come along in the future. The only way of combating that dilemma is to mould Coventry United into a well-established second tier side in their own right. Keeping players like O’Brien on the books for their second FA Women’s Championship campaign is the first step on a long journey towards achieving that goal.
