Manchester City have confirmed via their official website that they have signed England international and former Everton forward Chloe Kelly on a two-year deal.
Kelly was one of the standout stars of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League last season, scoring nine goals in 12 appearances for Everton making her the fourth-highest goalscorer in the league.
It was announced last month that Kelly would not be taking up the offer of a new contract with the Merseyside club and the rumour mill was rife with speculation about her next destination.
Manchester City had been identified as the favourites for her signature and today those rumours were confirmed as Kelly sealed her move to The Academy Stadium.
Speaking with City’s official website, Kelly expressed her eagerness to be running out in the sky blue shirt next season by saying “I’m unbelievably excited. I’m just so happy to have the deal sorted and I can’t wait to get going – I’m honoured to be a City player.”
Manchester City have made it part of their ethos to develop young British players into world beaters in the last few years, the most recent examples being Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway, so there may be no better place to help one of England’s brightest young stars reach her full potential.
Kelly will be wearing the number nine shirt which has recently been vacated by Pauline Bremer who returned to her native Germany to join VfL Wolfsburg. The former Arsenal player is currently Manchester City’s first signing of the summer transfer window, however, with so much speculation going around regarding the futures of full-backs Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood, it probably won’t be long before she is joined by her fellow Lionesses.
