Durham number nine signs on the dotted line

Durham striker Nicki Gears has agreed a new one-year deal with the FA Women’s Championship club according to reports on The Wildcats’ official website.

The forward is one of Durham’s longest-serving players with Gears having been with The Wildcats since 2015 and she currently holds the number nine shirt at New Ferens Park.

Gears scored just once for Durham in the FA Women’s Championship last season, however, it was an important goal as The Wildcats held eventual champions Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw on their own turf back in October. The forward has netted 13 times for her club in total in 93 competitive appearances.

Durham again performed well in the second tier in 2019/2020 just like they have done in previous seasons. Lee Sanders’ side recorded a respectable third place finish, eight points adrift of Aston Villa who were handed the title on a points per game basis with the season coming to a premature end as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

It is a case of fine lines which have denied Durham a long-awaited place in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League but manager Sanders is set to assemble a strong squad once again for the coming season and having players such as Gears onboard can only help the club’s cause.
