Arsenal have announced via their official website the signing of Swiss international defender Noelle Maritz, their fourth addition of the summer so far.
Maritz joins The Gunners from German champions VfL Wolfsburg, where she has spent the last seven seasons, winning five league titles as well as the DFB Frauen-Pokal three times. In that time, she made over 150 appearances, netting nine goals along the way. Maritz is also a UEFA Women’s Champions League winner with the FLYERALARM Frauen Bundesliga side, triumphing in 2014.
The 24-year-old is also a regular in the Swiss national team, where she plays alongside current Arsenal midfielder Lia Walti as well as fellow new signing Malin Gut. The versatile defender, who can play at both left and right-back, has 74 caps for her country, scoring one goal in the process.
Under the new UEFA Women’s Champions League rules announced today, Maritz will be eligible to play in Arsenal’s forthcoming quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain, despite having featured for VfL Wolfsburg in earlier rounds of this year’s competition.
Speaking about his newest signing, Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro told official Arsenal sources how ‘ecstatic’ he is ‘to have a player of Noelle’s calibre at the club’.
He said “She’s been on our radar for the last six months because she’s very proactive going forward, but again, she’s another player that’s played in Champions League finals and big games. She really suits the kind of player that we want at this club.”
Maritz shared in her new manager’s excitement, saying “I’m really excited and so happy that I can play for such a huge club.
“I honestly can’t wait to just get started now and meet all of my new teammates. This is a whole new challenge for me and I feel like it’s a great step in my career and development.”
Maritz will wear the number 16 shirt and joins the North Londoners for an undisclosed amount of time.
