Former Reading defender Georgia Clifford has joined Crystal Palace ahead of the new FA Women’s Championship season according to reports on The Eagles’ official website.
The 21-year-old becomes Palace boss Dean Davenport’s fourth addition of the summer having already acquired the services of goalkeeper Chloe Morgan, defender Ffion Morgan and attacker Kate Natkiel.
Centre-back Clifford had most recently been playing her football in the third tier with Oxford United where she won the club’s Player of the Year award for the 2019/2020 campaign. She helped The Yellows to third place in the FA Women’s National League Southern Division last season prior to the campaign being brought to a premature close due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The youngster has previously represented Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Reading but an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury halted her progress at the Berkshire club and she dropped down the footballing pyramid in a bid to launch her senior career.
After signing on at Hayes Lane, Clifford told Crystal Palace’s official media sources “I’m really excited to join Palace as it has always been a club I have admired.
“The drive and determination within the staff and players to keep developing and to move higher within the women’s game is something I look for in a club.”
The signing of Clifford now means that manager Davenport has some strong competition in defence with four quality centre-backs now on the club’s books for the new season.
