Highly-rated defender Ellie Stewart has signed a one-year contract extension with Blackburn Rovers according to reports on the club’s official website.
The 23-year-old centre-back has enjoyed two separate spells with Rovers, re-joining the club for a second time from Sunderland in 2018.
Stewart played an important role for Rovers in their first season in the FA Women’s Championship in 2019/2020. She played every single minute of league action for the club last season prior to the premature conclusion due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
It has this evening been confirmed that Stewart has agreed to remain with Blackburn Rovers for the upcoming campaign. She joins teammate Saffron Jordon in extending her contract at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium for the coming season.
Stewart started her career with Everton before making the move to the red side of the city to represent their Merseyside rivals Liverpool. The defender then joined Rovers for the first time before returning to the top flight of women’s football with Sunderland. The player returned to the Lancashire club just 12 months later.
In her time as a Blackburn Rovers player, Stewart has represented the club on 42 occasions while she has netted 11 goals. She was one of just three Rovers players to feature in all of their FA Women’s Championship fixtures last season.
