Welcome to our weekly Manchester City Women Official Supporters’ Club update.
Let me start once again by saying that I hope that you are all keeping safe and well in these uncertain times.
The past couple of weeks have seen a busy pre-season build up at Manchester City as we followed up our recent signing of Chloe Kelly with the addition of two stars of the United States’ FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019-winning team, Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle. The addition of such quality to our squad has made us as fans so excited for the new season, we can’t wait to get going. Everyone here at our OSC would like to take this oppertunity to welcome them to Manchester and assure them that we are working on their songs already.
With the world the way it is this year, obviously the usual pre-season tours have been abandoned and replaced by a set of more domestic warm-up fixtures. We have faced Coventry United, Sheffield United and Aston Villa recently and no doubt we have more lined-up as we move towards our opening fixture. Ironically, Villa will be our first Barclays FA Women’s Super League opponents when the league starts up again in early September, the away trip to the Midlands will be followed by a home game against Brighton & Hove Albion. We eagerly await the publication of the remaining fixtures.
We are delighted to see the return of the Community Shield to the women’s calendar for the first time since 2008. Although our joy of playing Chelsea at Wembley in the traditional curtain raiser is tempered a little as it is to be played behind-closed-doors, the news that it is live on BBC One for all to see is very welcome. It was around that fact that we have based our latest OSC event. We can’t go to the game so we are going to do the next best thing and watch it together via a Zoom virtual link-up with all of our members worldwide. We will have all of the fun and banter of a usual Manchester City Women OSC away day but from the comfort of our living rooms. We will even enhance the matchday feel with half-time debate and a prize draw (one prize being a season-long E-subscription to FAWSL Full-Time magazine while there are more prizes to follow). We will contact our members next week with the details they need to join in.
Speaking of members, we have been very busy this week as it is the time of year when we renew our memberships for the new season. We have seen record numbers of new members signing up, plus many regulars renewing. We are now a global group with members in Brazil, Canada, France, USA and Ireland to name a few. On behalf of the committee, I would like to say thank you to each and every member that has renewed or joined up for this season. This is a supporters’ club that welcomes all and we hope that we have a fantastic and successful season together.
I hope that you all continue to stay safe and I’m sure you can’t wait to get going too.
See you all next week.
Dave (Committee member – MCWFC OSC)
