Manchester United confirm Green departure

Manchester United midfielder Mollie Green has left the club after mutually agreeing to terminate her contract according to reports on The Red Devils’ official website.

The 23-year-old has spent the last two years with United and was part of their first-ever professional team.

Green had shone in the FA Women’s Championship for The Red Devils in 2018/2019 but found her opportunities few and far between once the club were promoted. The Merseyside-born midfielder made just two appearances for Casey Stoney’s side during the last campaign before joining Sheffield United on loan. Conversely, she made 27 appearances during the 2018/2019 season and scored 16 goals during that time.

Prior to her time at Manchester United Green had spells at both Everton and Liverpool, making 20 appearances for the former before making the switch to The Leigh Sports Village.

United boss Stoney has paid tribute to the player by saying “Mollie is another of the club’s history makers who began this journey with us two years ago.

“She played a part in our promotion to the Super League and I am grateful for her contribution to the team whilst she has been with us. I want to thank her and wish her the best of luck for the future.”

Green is the sixth player to leave Manchester United this summer following the departures of Aurora Mikalsen, Aimee Palmer, Lizzie Arnot, Charlotte Newsham and the recently retired Siobhan Chamberlain.

The midfielder is rumoured to be set to join Birmingham City where she would be reunited with manager Carla Ward who she played under during her time at Sheffield United. The speculation is yet to be officially confirmed as accurate as Green initially becomes a free agent.
