Everton are into the semi-finals of this season’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup after recording a shock 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Goodison Park.
It all seemed to be going to plan for Emma Hayes’ Chelsea side who took an early lead through Erin Cuthbert but Everton roared back with Lucy Graham and Valerie Gauvin getting their names on the scoresheet as The Blue Girls turned the game on it’s head.
Cuthbert placed the ball into the net for the game’s opening goal after just four minutes while the same player forced a good save from home keeper Sandy MacIver later in the half.
Everton levelled matters late on in the first half as Lucy Graham headed home from a Taylor Hinds cross. It almost got even better for Willie Kirk’s side two minutes later but Hayley Raso’s shot was cleared off the line by Jess Carter with Ann-Katrin Berger beaten.
MacIver came to Everton’s rescue early in the second half as she denied Fran Kirby when one-on-one with the England international before Gauvin headed the home side into the lead from close range.
Chelsea frantically pushed for an equaliser but Cuthbert could not hit the target with her shot while MacIver was again the hero for The Blue Girls as she blocked Pernille Harder’s effort.
Everton hung on for a famous victory and they will now look forward to a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion or Birmingham City in the semi-finals on Wednesday evening.
