Sheffield United forward Veatriki Sarri was a 75th-minute substitute for Greece as they were defeated 4-0 by the Ukraine in their latest UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match in Athens this afternoon.
Sarri was introduced with Greece trailing 3-0 in what was a dead rubber match for the hosts at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.
It was a disastrous start for Greece with Ukrainian midfielder Natiya Pantsulaya firing home the game’s opening goal after just five minutes.
The visitors had the majority of the attacking play during the first half and they doubled their lead just before the half-hour through Darya Kravets before the woodwork denied Lyubov Schmatko a third.
Kravets was again on target early in the second half as the Ukraine took a three-goal lead before Greek head coach Dimosthenis Kavouras brought on Sheffield United’s Sarri as he looked to bring some respect back to the scoreline.
Sarri had no real opportunity to put her stamp on the game and it was soon 4-0 when Schmatko played in Nadiia Kunina, allowing her to add her name to the goalscorers.
Greece complete their unsuccessful qualifying campaign with a trip to Germany next month. Ukraine will host Montenegro in December in their final match and will need a favourable outcome from Republic of Ireland’s fixture against Germany to secure a play-off spot.
