REWIND: Three thrilling matches from the inaugural Women’s Football Weekend

Women’s Football Weekend returns this weekend with 11 matches in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship.

Women’s Football Weekend ’20 is the second edition of the incentive which shines a spotlight on the women’s game with the men’s competitions on an international break.

Ahead of this year’s event, FA Women’s Super League Full-Time take a look back at last year’s action as we pick three of the most exciting fixtures from the weekend.

Reading 3 Bristol City 3

The most fascinating fixture of the entire weekend came at The Madejski Stadium as Reading were held to a 3-3 draw by a plucky Bristol City outfit.

Quick-fire early goals from Remi Allen and Brooke Chaplen gave the hosts an early lead, although Charlie Wellings reduced the arrears for Bristol City with a goal towards the end of the half.

Angharad James’ 47th-minute goal for Reading looked to have wrapped up the points for Kelly Chambers’ side but a stunning fightback from Bristol City saw Yana Daniels and Ebony Salmon find the back of the net as the game ended 3-3 against all odds.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Arsenal 2

A record-breaking 38,262 fans attended the first Barclays FA Women’s Super League North London derby as Tottenham Hotspur played host to Arsenal at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs implemented their game plan exceptionally well for the majority of the game, proving to be tough opponents for Joe Montemurro’s Arsenal side.

The home side’s resistance was broken midway through the second half when Kim Little rifled in before Vivianne Miedema’s late goal made the scoreline look a little more one-sided than the game really was.

It was a thrilling match which highlighted just what a welcome edition the North London derby is to the top flight. There will undoubtedly be many more of these special occasions to come with Spurs hoping to be a long-term fixture in the top flight.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

Chelsea’s home fixture against Manchester United wasn’t one for goals but what it did highlight was newly-promoted United’s ability to push hard against the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s elite despite their lack of top flight knowhow.

Following a goalless first half at Kingsmeadow, Chelsea took the lead in the 65th minute when Maren Mjelde scored from the penalty spot after Fran Kirby was adjudged to have been fouled by Millie Turner in what was a much-contested decision.

United deserved something from the game but it simply wasn’t their day as Ann-Katrin Berger pushed an Ella Toone effort onto the woodwork late on as Chelsea held on to collect three points.

Women’s Football Weekend ’20 will unfortunately see all games played behind-closed-doors, however, there is plenty to still get fans excited about with most games being televised or made available for live streaming.
