Bristol City secure their first point of the season against 10-player Spurs

Bristol City have their first point in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League with Ebony Salmon netting an injury time equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Twerton Park.

Spurs dominated possession in a game billed as must win for them but they were unable to hold onto their lead after Rianna Dean was sent off.

The early advances came from Bristol City but Spurs soon took control of the game. After 30 minutes, the hosts started to edge back into it and it wasn’t long before Siri Worm brought down Flo Allen inside the area and Bristol City were awarded the penalty. Becky Spencer in the Spurs goal went the wrong way as Chloe Logarzo successfully slotted the ball into the back of the net.

It didn’t take long for Spurs to get back into the game as Worm redeemed herself with a curling free-kick that found the back of the net inside the far post as the first half ended 1-1.

Dean replaced Alex Morgan for Spurs as the second half got underway. It continued much the same as the first half with Karen Hills and Juan Amoros’ side unable to make the most of their dominance. After 64 minutes, it was another free-kick from Worm that broke the deadlock as Ashleigh Neville headed home from her teammate’s delivery from close range.

Both sides had chances as the game went on with Spencer making a good save low down before Spurs thought they had a third goal as Worm’s free-kick got lost in a bundle on the line but in the end, Bristol City kept it out. That moment came soon after Dean had been sent off for a foul on home keeper Sophie Baggaley which left both players needing lengthy treatment.

Seven minutes of added time were indicated by the fourth official and after two of those minutes, Salmon raced in and fired at the Spurs goal, her shot beating Spencer to make the scoreline 2-2. The visiting players fell to their knees as the Bristol City bench rose to their feet in delight.

The hosts were clearly elated to secure their first point of the season which will put them in a good frame of mind for their midweek trip to Lewes. Spurs were clearly disappointed with the result as they are still to get their first league win of the season with another trip to Arsenal to come in midweek in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.
