Everton boss Kirk bemoans simple mistakes in draw with Reading

Everton boss Willie Kirk admitted that he was left frustrated by the simple errors made by his side as The Blue Girls drew 1-1 with Reading at Walton Hall Park this evening.

In a game which probably won’t live too long in the memory with clear goalscoring opportunities being at a premium, Everton failed to take advantage of the rare spaces in the final third which did open up to them as Reading collected another useful point on the road.

When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time after the match, Kirk admitted that it had been a hugely frustrating afternoon for his side.

“For us, it was small details which let us down” said Kirk. “There were lots of final third entries, lots of opportunities to create good chances but the wrong option was taken or the pass was not good enough or the decision.

“So many small details have let us down, things like not hitting the target or not winning tackles.

“Even in the first minute we have had a chance and not hit the target from eight yards.

“That was the story for us, we were probably the better team and set up aggressively but it’s just a frustrating night for us.”

Everton were close to snatching a victory late in stoppage time but Megan Finnigan’s header was clawed to safety by visiting keeper Grace Moloney and Kirk was quick to praise the Reading stopper for that save.

“Grace (Moloney) hasn’t done much wrong tonight so she probably deserves that save at the end.

“It was an outstanding save. When you work as hard as Reading do, you deserve any breaks that go your way.”

After starting the campaign with four consecutive Barclays FA Women’s Super League wins, Everton are now winless in three but Kirk is remaining very level-headed about his side’s season so far.

“After the first few games we weren’t the best team in England, just like we aren’t the worst team in England now” said the Everton boss. “We are still a top team, we still have things to work on and again it’s the small details, it’s decision making.

“It just didn’t happen for us tonight.”

Everton will now face Liverpool in an FA Women’s Continental League Cup Merseyside derby at Walton Hall Park in midweek before going into the international break.
