Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season will carry on into December after Lotte Wubben-Moy’s injury time own goal helped The Blues record a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Meadow Park this afternoon.
Beth Mead’s late goal looked to have handed Arsenal a first victory over Chelsea in six attempts but there was to be a late twist with Pernille Harder’s cross looping over home keeper Manuela Zinsberger via the boot of Wubben-Moy.
Arsenal went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a Caitlin Foord effort from range which twice rebounded off the crossbar before Chelsea keeper Ann-Katrin Berger managed to punch the ball away to safety.
The Gunners continued to search for the opening goal in the second half with Mead’s persistence almost producing the goods, the ball eventually being blocked by Magda Eriksson who put it behind for a corner kick.
Leah Williamson then blocked a Harder effort before Arsenal broke the deadlock four minutes from time with the only shot on target of the entire game, Vivianne Miedema crossing from the left for Mead to tap home at the back post.
With both chances and quality finishing having been at a premium throughout the 90 minutes, one could be forgiven for thinking that Arsenal had done enough for the win. As the game entered stoppage time, there was to be a late twist when birthday girl Harder attempted a cross from the right and the ball deflected off Wubben-Moy before looping into the Arsenal net.
Chelsea could have even taken the full three points at the death when Sam Kerr was left one-on-one with Zinsberger. She lobbed the Austrian but the ball bounced agonisingly wide as the scoreline remained 1-1.
Arsenal end the weekend in second position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table while Chelsea are third. Emma Hayes’ side could go top of the table should they win their game in hand against struggling Aston Villa.
