Manchester City full-back poised for long-awaited return in derby against United

Manchester City full-back Megan Campbell could make her long-awaited return from injury in Thursday’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup group fixture at Manchester United according to reports on the club’s official website.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international defender has had some rotten luck with injuries since joining Manchester City in 2016.

Campbell has been sidelined for the last 10 months with a tendon injury in her foot but has been building her fitness in recent weeks. It has today been confirmed that City head coach Gareth Taylor could consider fielding the player against Manchester United at The Leigh Sports Village on Thursday evening.

After winning their opening two group matches, Manchester City know that a point in Leigh will be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals. The Manchester derby was a fixture in last season’s competition with Manchester United running out 2-0 winners in the group stage at The Leigh Sports Village in a game which saw Keira Walsh dismissed for the visitors just after the hour mark.

Campbell played the full 90 minutes of last season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup clash between the two clubs and she will be hoping to play some part in the latest meeting as Manchester City look to take another step towards winning back the trophy.
