Spurs appoint Rehanne Skinner as new head coach

Following this afternoon’s announcement that joint-head coaches Karen Hills and Juan Amoros have left Tottenham Hotspur, the club have confirmed Phil Neville’s number two Rehanne Skinner as their new head coach.

Skinner was promoted from the England Under-21 set up this summer, becoming assistant head coach for the senior team for the September and October training camps.  Her coaching career began at Leicester where she co-founded Leicester City Women’s Football Club, securing four consecutive promotions. In 2010, she moved to Arsenal as an assistant coach and in her time there, the team won two FA Women’s Super League 1 titles and three domestic cups, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on two occasions.

In 2013, Skinner, as assistant coach of the Great Britain team, won Gold at the World University Student Games before moving to the United States where she worked in youth player development for three years. Subsequently, Skinner spent a season as assistant coach with Wales before joining The Football Assocation in 2017.

Skinner likes to take a player-centred approach to coaching with the emphasis on competitiveness and high work ethic. She has an excellent past record working both in the senior game and with talented young players.

Like her predecessors, Skinner has experience of working at the lower levels of women’s football and bringing teams up the leagues before the women’s game became professional. Skinner’s experience of youth development is particularly important to Spurs with a number of young players looking to push their performances to the next level including England youth internationals Rianna Dean, Chloe Peplow and Jess Naz, whose return from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is imminent.

Speaking to Spurs’ official media sources this afternoon, Skinner said “I am really excited to be joining Tottenham Hotspur and cannot wait to get started in the WSL after the international break.

“The Club’s philosophy and future plans are something I was really keen to be a part of.

“They have shown a real commitment to the women’s team and have come a long way in a short period of time which is a credit to all the players and staff involved.

“There is some incredible experience within this squad and I am looking forward to getting to work with the players so we can build on the progress that has been made so far and bring future success to the team.”

Skinner’s first match in charge will be Spurs’ Barclays FA Women’s Super League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at The Hive on Sunday 6 December.
