Arsenal defender Leonie Maier has reached 75 senior caps for Germany with the player having played the full 90 minutes in the nation’s 6-0 victory over Greece in Ingolstadt this afternoon.
The 28-year-old Stuttgart-born defender has reached her latest appearance milestone a little over seven years on from making his maiden appearance for her country at senior level.
Maier was a member of a German defence which was rarely troubled by opponents Greece at the Audi Sportpark this afternoon. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side were easy winners with Germany netting four first half goals as the visitors were simply blown away. Defender Marina Hegering opened the scoring after 17 minutes before the hugely impressive Laura Freigang netted herself a first half hat-trick.
Linda Dallmann and Paulina Krumbiegel added further goals in the second half for the Germans who went into the match having already qualified for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament finals.
Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz came off the bench to play the last 28 minutes for Germany while Sheffield United forward Veatriki Sarri was unused by visitors Greece.
Barclays FA Women’s Super League stars Maier and Leupolz will be hoping for more international minutes when Germany face the Republic of Ireland in their final qualifying match in Dublin on Tuesday evening.
