Manchester City midfielder Rose Lavelle was on target for the United States this evening as they defeated The Netherlands 2-0 in Breda in an international friendly match.
The 25-year-old netted the first goal for the world champions as they followed up their FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 final victory over the Dutch with another win in the re-match.
The first half was very much one way traffic with home keeper Sari van Veenendaal called into action several times to keep out the United States attack. The former Arsenal stopper denied both Lynn Williams and Christen Press on more than one occasion while she was also required to keep Tobin Heath and Sam Mewis efforts out of the net. The first half eventually produced a goal with Lavelle curling home the opener four minutes before the break.
The home side were better after the break, keeping chances to a premium. The United States doubled their lead 20 minutes from time when Williams played in Kristie Mewis to tap the ball home.
Arsenal’s Jill Roord registered one of The Netherlands’ two shots on goal but she fired wide late in the game on a night that saw the United States again prove their superiority as world champions with The Stars and Stripes running out 2-0 winners in Breda.
