Manchester United forward Maria Edwards scored her first senior goal this afternoon as loan club Blackburn Rovers played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Sheffield United at The Technique Stadium.
Rovers have been in great form of late and they got off to the perfect start in Chesterfield with Manchester United loanee Edwards breaking the deadlock after just 20 seconds.
Edwards took full advantage when an Elise Hughes shot fell into her path. The youngster converted from just a few yards, prodding the ball low into the corner of the Sheffield United net. That goal was her first in a Rovers shirt and her first as a senior professional with Edwards yet to make her mark for parent club Manchester United.
Saffron Jordan quickly added a second goal for Rovers before Katie Wilkinson reduced the arrears from the penalty spot for Sheffield United.
A frantic first half saw Jade Richards head home a third goal for Gemma Donnelly’s side before the hosts again pulled a goal back with a second Wilkinson penalty.
Loanee Edwards was substituted early in the second half as Rovers looked to protect their lead. The Lancashire club battled valiantly throughout the second period but they were left with broken hearts as Courtney Sweetman-Kirk headed home an equaliser eight minutes from time.
The draw means that Blackburn Rovers have now extended their unbeaten run in the FA Women’s Championship to six matches.
