Arsenal defender and Chelsea midfielder make German Player of the Year shortlist

Arsenal defender Leonie Maier and Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz have been named in the eight-player shortlist for the German national team’s Player of the Year award for 2020.

The German Football Association, the DFB, announced those players nominated for the award earlier today via their official website with Barclays FA Women’s Super League pair Maier and Leupolz included.

Germany played six competitive fixtures throughout 2020, winning all of them. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side scored 20 goals and conceded just one. The nation also secured their place in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament finals following a successful qualification campaign.

Arsenal defender Maier played in four of Germany’s six matches while Chelsea midfielder Leupolz made five appearances, scoring her only goal of the year in her side’s 3-0 victory over Montenegro in Podgorica in September.

The pair will face some stern completion for the award from German captain Dzsenifer Marozsan and Bayern Munich midfielder Lina Magull. Merle Frohms, Lena Lattwein, Sydney Lohmann and Lena Sophie Oberdorf are the other players to make up the shortlist.

Fans can vote for their favourite on the DFB official website until 9 January 2021. The winner of the award is expected to be revealed by the DFB by the end of January. Bayern Munich defender Giuilia Gwinn is the current holder of the award.
